19. Wilson Pass (Artificial Water Point)
Land Manager: BLM; Burley Field Office
Legal Location: T 15S R 22E Section 5 Cassia County
Allotment: #4027 Goose Creek Group
Dominant Plant Community Type: Sagebrush-Grass
Impacts: A pipeline carrying water to troughs in the arid lands east of Oakley Reservoir has been allowed to run continuously on the ground at this location. Although not a natural spring, the presence of surface water and green grass draws both wildlife and domestic animals to the site. Trampling, erosion, and down-cutting have been occurring. Livestock drawn to the water have impacted the sage-steppe community for some distance around the site. Although fresh water is available at the outlet, the open water on the ground is mixed with manure. There is no riparian habitat currently at this site.
Recommendations: Sage Grouse, Kit Fox, and other sensitive species reside near this location and may be relying on this water source. It is recommended that if the BLM intends to leave this water source in place, a low container of a design not hazardous to birds and small mammals be placed at the site in order to provide fresh water in greater volume. The flow should be adjusted to avoid erosion and waste of this resource.
