5. Red Rock Spring
Land Manager. BLM, Burley Field Office
Legal Location: T 14S R 26E Section 18 Cassia County
Allotment: #5003 Jim Sage
Dominant Plant Community Type: Sagebrush-Juniper
Impacts: Livestock utilization has severely impacted this spring and spring flow. Only a few remnants of riparian vegetation still exist at this location. Trampling of the spring and hydric zone has led to disruption of flow and loss of channel. Understory removal and the lack of riparian structure are very limiting to wildlife at this location.
Recommendations: It is recommended that livestock be withdrawn from this location. Significant riparian recovery (based on regenerative capability) would require a minimum time period of 3-6 years. Willow and other riparian species need to achieve a height of 6 feet or more in order to withstand short duration grazing.
List of Figures:
1. Severe impacts to spring site, loss of riparian structure.
2. Loss of channel and flow, loss of riparian structure, replacement by non-riparian species.
