30. Sugarloaf Spring

Land Manager: BLM, Burley Field Office
Legal Location: T 12S R 18E Section 21 Cassia County
Allotment: # not known

Dominant Plant Community Type: Shrub-Grass

Impacts: This spring location is within a current BLM exclosure facility. Although signs of past utilization are still evident, the riparian structure along the current spring site is in recovery with a variety of age classes present in the willow community. The exclosure includes a large amount of upland area below the spring site, which is also in stages of recovery. Livestock utilization of adjacent uplands outside the fence is still heavy. There were livestock present outside the fence at the time of survey; the differences in habitat can be seen in Figure 1.

Recommendations: Current protection is commendable and should be maintained. Closure of the road next to the fence and expansion of the protected habitat along the east and west sides of the resource into the adjacent rocky uplands should be considered as it would increase the diversity of protected habitat for wildlife.
