8. Unnamed Springs, BLM

Land Manager: BLM, Burley Field Office
Legal Location: T 13S R24E Section 26 Cassia County
Allotment: #5021 Middle Hill

Dominant Plant Community Type: Shrub-Grass/Juniper

Impacts: Livestock utilization has heavily impacted the spring sites and riparian vegetation within this allotment. One trough is located less than 100 feet from the main spring. Severe trampling has occurred within the hydric zones. Utilization of the riparian vegetation has occurred, at the springs as well as along the spring outflow. Cumulative impacts along the small flow or creek have been severe enough to lead to removal of all but remnant riparian species and loss of the riparian greenline.

Recommendations: It is recommended that livestock be permanently excluded from these springs and the adjacent habitat. Substantial riparian recovery along the small creek flow will take 3-6 years or more, depending on regenerative capability. Willows and other riparian shrubs need to reach a height of 6 feet or more in order to withstand short duration grazing. Water developments should be moved away from this location.

List of Figures:

                1. Trampling at main spring, vegetation impacts, degraded water quality and loss of flow.

                2. Utilization impacts; loss of riparian species and riparian greenline.
