6. Spring Canyon
Land Manager: BLM, Burley Field Office
Legal Location: T 11S R 24E Section 23 Cassia County
Allotment: #5010 View
Dominant Plant Community Type: Shrub-Grass/Juniper
Impacts: Livestock utilization has heavily impacted the spring sites and riparian vegetation within this small allotment. Severe trampling has occurred within the hydric zones and channel. Loss of water table, severe down-cutting, and severe head-cutting have occurred. Cumulative utilization impacts have led to removal of all but remnant riparian structure and loss of the riparian greenline. Trash has been dumped on both BLM and private land in the area. Water available for wildlife has been severely degraded.
Recommendations: It is recommended that livestock be permanently excluded from these springs and the adjacent habitat. Substantial riparian recovery and bank stabilization along the small drainage will take 3-6 years or more, depending on regenerative capability.
