3. Cold Spring

Dominant Plant Community Type: Aspen-Shrub/Conifer

Impacts: Cumulative impacts from livestock utilization have severely degraded this spring site. Utilization has been concentrated directly within the multiple zones of emergence. Understory removal has been severe in adjacent aspen habitat, along with impacts to saplings. Remnant riparian vegetation has been heavily impacted. Trampling and disturbance of the hydric region and spring flows have initiated down-cutting and head-cutting. Water quality has been seriously degraded.

Recommendations: It is recommended that livestock be permanently excluded from this location, as well as from a large portion of the adjacent habitat. This site would benefit from mitigation efforts such as the planting of appropriate riparian species.
